Summary

This Gradual contains liturgical texts and their musical settings for the feasts of saints from Saint Andrew to Saint Clement (fols. 1r-59r) and the Common of Saints (fols. 49r-140v). It is one of a number of large liturgical manuscripts in the collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia (MSS Lewis E 221-234) associated with the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, near Lisbon. Together, these books may have formed a complete set of choir books for the monastery and, according to the colophons in MSS Lewis E 221 and 222, were paid for by King John III in June 1548. The text of this manuscript is embellished with numerous black and colored initials of varying heights with pen-work decoration. There is a single illuminated initial on fol. 51r, beginning the introit for the feast of Saint Jerome. At least one leaf is missing from the beginning of the book, and perhaps more from the end. Two single leaves were bound into the book (fols. 51 and 72) during or soon after its production. This manuscript preserves its eighteenth century binding, complete with metal bosses and corners and one of its clasps. Inside the front and back covers, fragments from other manuscripts have been used as paste-downs and as string guards. This book's considerable size – over a meter wide when open – would have made it visible to the whole choir during services.
