Summary

This mid-fifteenth-century Book of Hours contains a Calendar in French, Gospel Lessons, and the Obsecro te, followed by the Hours of the Virgin of the Use of Paris, with some portions missing and with others misbound, the Hours of the Cross, Penitential Psalms, Litany, and Prayers, and the Office of the Dead. The book concludes with prayers for the Fifteen Joys of the Virgin in French and a fragment of the Seven Requests of Our Lord, also in French. Ten large miniatures survive (those for the Hours of the Cross, and for Prime and None of the Hours of the Virgin are missing), with varying degrees of repainting visible. The miniature introducing the Penitential Psalms, in particular, has been almost entirely repainted.

• Pages missing between folios 52 and 53 (miniature for Hours of the Cross) and folios 79 and 80 (miniature for Prime); None for Hours of the Virgin lacking altogether; Vespers bound later in manuscript (fols. 149r-158v), following Litany (though rubric on fol. 148v indicates following section should be Hours of the Cross); Penitential Psalms, Litany, and Prayers inserted (fols. 125r-148v), along with Vespers for Hours of the Virgin, partway through Office of the Dead (which resumes on fol. 159r)

• Inscriptions in miniatures: fol. 14r: Saint John the Evangelist holds a scroll that reads: "Santo iohannes evangeliste..." (?); fol. 29r: the Angel Gabriel holds a scroll that reads: "Ave Maria..."; fol 87r: Angel hols a scroll that reads: "Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum"

Crane, sale by Anderson (New York, 1912); John Frederick Lewis, Philadelphia; given by his widow, Anne Baker Lewis, to the Free Library of Philadelphia in 1936; on fol. 80r it is written: "Ce liure apartin a Antoine, Antoine Lagnier Le i may 1677"; on fol. 158v, there is an inscription in the lower margin: "1803"; fragment of a letter, written in French in a seventeenth-century (?) hand used for the lower pastedown (much of this is very faded), and possibly for the upper pastedown
